Weaken vs D.O.T. what's the difference?

I don't understand the difference between those two types of damage when it comes to offensive skills. I know Burst is lots of damage at one time and Weaken and DoT are gradual damage yet I don't understand what makes Weaken status any different than D.O.T? Can someone explain this?
